Wits University is seeking to appoint a Tutor Programme Coordinator for its Centre for Learning, Teaching, and Development (CLTD) unit. The Tutor Programme Coordinator will develop, facilitate and coordinate the university’s tutor training programme.

This is a one-year grant-funded contract appointment. The contract may be extended for a further two years, should the necessary funding be secured. The position is based in Johannesburg, Gauteng.


The position will suit a self-motivated individual, skilled in facilitation of learning interactions. (S)he should have a passion for learning interaction design aimed at supporting students’ use of appropriate educational technologies for learning, and the implementation of innovations to promote active and collaborative learning. The successful candidate will be expected to be fully familiar with and to actively keep abreast of developments in a wide range of educational technologies. The candidate should be comfortable communicating with academics and administrators as (s)he will work across a number of institutional settings and will collaborate with various stakeholder groups and communities of practice.

The main purpose of this position, reporting to the Head: Evaluation Services is to:

  • Coordinate the university’s tutor programme;
  • In collaboration with schools and/or faculties, support the identification and recruitment of suitable tutors;
  • Develop and facilitate a hyflex learning programme for newly appointed tutors;
  • Establish and facilitate a Tutoring Community of Practice;
  • Develop a range of self-help materials on relevant policies, procedures, and guidelines for tutors;
  • Develop and administer instrument(s) for monitoring and evaluating the tutoring sessions, individual tutors, and the tutoring programme as a whole against set objectives;
  • Provide regular reports on the progress of the university’s tutoring programme;
  • Engage in the scholarship of learning and teaching with a focus on current research on Tutoring programmes
  • Supervise the activities of the Tutor Coordinator Assistant.


  • An Honours degree (or equivalent) in the field of Education or other relevant discipline;
  • A minimum of 3 years of Higher Education working experience including initiatives for the development, facilitation, and coordination of hyflex Tutoring programmes in a complex university environment;
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to work independently and in teams;
  • Willingness to engage in continuing professional and personal learning;
  • Excellent facilitation, mentoring, coaching, inter-personal, assessment and communication skills;
  • Good report writing and research skills;
  • High level of computer literacy and proficiency in software such as the Office365 suite of programmes.

Preference will be given to candidates with:

  • A Masters degree in the field of Education or other relevant discipline.
  • Additional qualifications in curriculum development (e.g. educational technology, instructional design, computer-integrated education), and proven, advanced knowledge of neuro-education.
  • Substantial previous experience in facilitation of blended or hyflex learning interactions in a Higher Education settings.
  • Specialised skills in monitoring or formally evaluating projects or initiatives.
